"Coming from a supportive family, and being part of a long lineage of great artists starting with Dean Keller Sr., and George Bridgman, along with extensive European travel have provided me endless hours of discovery in the world of art. I have come to realize that the works that personally mean the most to me reflect the deepest feelings in my being.
The art that first stirred my soul as a young artist were the works of the Pre-Raphaelites. In these paintings, I saw beauty, innocence, love and passion. Recently, I rediscovered the work of Rembrandt in a way that I had never known. The connection to the human spirit resided in each of his brushstrokes, the light in his paintings revealed his intimate relationship with the model and thus the privileged viewer was to become part of his extraordinary vision. This discovery eventually brought me to two years of intensive study of the masters and back to being a student, but with a different perspective. Contemporary masters, David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw, re-awakened my love for realism and the desire to learn more, to see with better understanding and to speak in the language of the masters. Discovering the writings of John Ruskin offered more insight and a deeper understanding into the esthetics and theories of art. These events helped me to form my own philosophies of art that I could now apply to my own work and to teaching. It is very satisfying to me that I am able to pass on to my students the knowledge gained from my journey.
I spend most of my days painting or drawing and continue my investigation into what made the masters so accomplished in their craft. I am forever grateful to all my teachers and to the Old Masters for what they left behind. My goal is to become more accomplished at drawing, painting and teaching and to better understand the world around me. Slowing down life is possible when I am making art. My greatest wish is to pursue my craft with compassion and humbleness and to continue learning.
The paintings you see in this show represent a part of the journey through my many years of study. I continue to be fueled and motivated by what I do not know rather than what I do know, “after all isn’t this where the real mystery lies.”
