THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES: Presented by Students of Providence College TWO PERFORMANCES: Wednesday, February 9, 6:30pm Saturday, February 12, 1:00pm ... Tickets: $12 adults, $7 students Tickets can be purchased at Avon Cinema. Each year, a group of PC students organize an annual off-campus performance of "The Vagina Monologues", a play that raises awareness regarding issues that women face on both a local and global level. The play is part of a global movement called "V-Day", a movement geared toward raising funds to benefit various organizations that all have a stake in fighting for women's rights and toward gender equality. The play, which was performed under the sponsorship of academic departments for a number of years at Providence College, was banned in 2006 and has since been operating as an independent movement led by passionate PC students. Each year V-Day increases awareness by focusing on a specific group of women in the world who are resisting violence with courage and vision. In 2011, V-Day's Spotlight Campaign will be on the Women and Girls of Haiti. The Spotlight will highlight the high levels of violence against women and girls in Haiti, and will focus on the increased rates of sexual violence since the devastating earthquake that took place in January 2010. All funds raised through the Spotlight Campaign will be used to support a revolutionary national campaign in Haiti lead by a coalition of women activists - including longtime V-Day activist Elvire Eugene - that will address sexual violence through art, advocacy, safe shelter and legal services. All other proceeds will benefit the Women's Fund of Rhode Island. SPREAD THE WORD, CLEAR YOUR SCHEDULE, and HELP FIGHT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!
